Boston Landmarks Commission
From HistoricHydeSquare
The City of Boston's local preservation office is the Boston Landmarks Commission (BLC). The BLC is made up of 10 commissioners appointed by the mayor. The BLC is run by an executive director and staffed by historians and architects.
Role in the National Register process
The BLC makes recommendations to the state preservation office, the Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC). Once a recommendation is made, the MHC handles the National Register nomination.
Role in overseeing Boston Landmarks and Boston Landmark Districts
The BLC reviews all exterior changes to buildings that are listed as Boston Landmarks. Commissioners also sit on the Historic District Commissions which oversee exterior changes to buildings in Boston Landmark Districts and Architectural Conservation Districts.
